Home to the International Tennis Hall of Fame, it is one of the finest examples of Victorian shingle-style architecture in the world. Commissioned by James Bennett to Charles McKim. Most lauded of all is the symmetry and balance of the Bellevue Avenue façade. Shingles and colonial motifs were used to symbolise indigenous precedents. The Casino has dark wooden shingles, the balustrade in the entrance stairway is ornately turned, the steeply pitched gables and second story overhang also most noteworthy. Stanford White was largely involved in the interior design. The word ‘casino’ is from ‘cascina’ in Italian, meaning ‘little house’; gambling isn’t accepted!
