‘La Miniatura’, the Millard House, is the first in the Textile Block house series by Frank Lloyd Wright, of which all are in California. Constructed in a mix of plain-faced and ornamental concrete blocks, each block was designed by Wright and cast on site. In order to replicate the natural landscape within the structure, the square blocks are perforated with glass-filled apertures, forming a continuous interior and exterior weave. Although he described concrete as the ‘ugliest thing in the world’, he used it numerous times in his Textile Block series and other commissions, such was his egomaniacal eccentricity. This series sees him attempt to blend standard material with his own artist ideology. It proved to be time consuming and more expensive than traditional construction.
