Also known as Lovell Heath House, Neutra designed the house for the physician Philip Lovell. It is a large, modernist residence that uses concrete on a grand scale, a first in LA at the time, and helped greatly augment Neutra’s reputation, not least because of Lovell’s puclic admiration for his architect’s work. Here he showed, with the property on such a steep incline, his mastery of landscaping, and his ability to blend aesthetics with a more humanist approach that was often missing in the modernist buildings of the time. The Lovell House had the same importance when it was built as the European iron and steel and glass exhibition buildings of the same time period. It was through this house that Los Angeles architecture became known in Europe.
