Described as the world's largest fixed dome structure at 680ft, the Louisiana Superdome was designed to resist winds up to 200mph. Hurricane Katrina tried its hardest in 2005, when its 145 mph winds blew away two sections of the roof while more than 10,000 people sought refuge inside. It did, however, remain structurally sound. It covers 13 acres and scales 27 stories. The idea for the Superdome was born while David Dixon was attempting to convince the NFL to award a franchise to New Orleans. Perhaps part of its misfortune stems from the fact that a cemetery was demolished in order to make way for the stadium.
