Designed by Lord Norman Foster and Ken Shuttleworth in 2002 for the Greater London Authority, this building is an architectural masterpiece, in that it is shaped for a 75% reduction in energy costs, while reducing the total glass surface area. The geometry and views afforded from the interior spiral stairway are astounding, the idea being copied from their earlier work in the Reichstag. Both positive and negative symbolism has been suggested: positive as a head, a suitable notion for the ‘Head’ of London; negative as a toppling pile of coins. The structure is also ideally suited for water, with the Thames River being its immediate neighbour. Architect: Foster & Partners
