Sitting, as a skyscraper, largely on its own, away from the cluster of Chicago high-rise buildings, it is a dominating presence in the area. Designed by two students of Mies van der Rohe, John Heinrich and George Schipporeit, and inspired by one of his earlier designs, it scales 600ft and houses 900 privately owned condominiums. The three-pronged structure uses curved glass, with a reinforced concrete structure, which houses elevators and a stairwell that absorb horizontal influences. Because of this, the perimeter pillars on the facade do not need to be large as they only have to bear the vertical loads. Sitting on a masonry podium, the curvilinear high-rise building brings variance to the standard rectangular or cuboid form that is so common in skyscrapers.
