Built on reclaimed land 5kms offshore to protect the local environment and control noise pollution, the architecture is internationally renowned for its blend of artistic and functional features: the roof's design creates an image of soaring, and the grand atrium extends across separate floors for domestic and international flights. Blending environmental concepts and a progressive design process brought together with international cooperation, has set the standard for architecture in the 21st century. It was constructed in 1993 with sand-drain fountain methods. A sea wall was built to ensure against typhoons, and it has even heald firm in the 1995 Kobe earthquake. The island has been gradually sinking under the weight of the island, to outstanding expense. Architect: Renzo Piano
