This 18-acre plot houses a colossal building that spans 5 blocks on the west side of Manhattan, designed by Pei to house the world's largest exhibition hall, with its a crystalline roof, harking back to the days of Crystal Palace in London. There is a 1,000ft long public forecourt and an 1.1-acre outdoor piazza. The extraordinariness of the Javits Center is that the entirety of its exterior is in rectilinear form of prefabricated steel modules fitted with clear glass, creating a transparent ‘skin’. The building is an education in basic geometry and engineering. There is a superb 150ft high (15 storey) space in the south, even named the ‘Crystal Palace’.
