The Richard Meier-designed building opened to worldwide praise in 1983, receiving numerous design awards. Constructed of concrete slabs and steel columns and frame, it is faced with Meier's trademark white, porcelain-enamelled, steel panels. Granite panels of the same size enclose the base of the building and a window grid system completes the exterior of the building. The entrance is a piano-shaped space, opening into a four-storey, curved atrium. The interior ramp system and the solid atrium walls mediate between the light-filled central space and the art itself, which may be seen from various levels, angles and distances. Spatial variety is created in the galleries with natural light, framed views and multiple interconnecting views.
