It is not surprising to hear that the Arch’s architect, Eero Saarinen, initially studied sculpture. Located on the banks of the Mississippi River, the monument honours Thomas Jefferson, while representing the expansion of western America. The catenary arch reaches 630ft both horizontally and vertically, the largest in the US, with the concrete foundation plunging 60ft in the earth. Plated in stainless steel, it can cope with strong winds thank to its 18-inch sway ability. There is an observation deck at the top which allows phenomenal views, accessed by passenger train up the arch, for miles in all directions.

St. Louis Arch

Located on the banks of the Mississippi River in St. Louis, Missouri, the Gateway Arch is a landmark most unique in size and structure. The tallest national monument in the United States, the Arch offers an unrivaled view of the city. After taking an egg-shaped tram to the top of the curve, feel the structure sway gently back and forth while enjoying views that extend for miles around.

After you return to the ground, enjoy the Museum of Westward Expansion, which is located in the foot of the monument. The center offers information about explorers Lewis and Clark, the American West, and interactive exhibits that children, especially, will appreciate.

Finally, take a moment while viewing the Arch from the Old Courthouse across the way to reflect upon the incredible feat of its construction and its general splendor.
