It is not surprising to hear that the Arch’s architect, Eero Saarinen, initially studied sculpture. Located on the banks of the Mississippi River, the monument honours Thomas Jefferson, while representing the expansion of western America. The catenary arch reaches 630ft both horizontally and vertically, the largest in the US, with the concrete foundation plunging 60ft in the earth. Plated in stainless steel, it can cope with strong winds thank to its 18-inch sway ability. There is an observation deck at the top which allows phenomenal views, accessed by passenger train up the arch, for miles in all directions.
