Originally called the Fuller Building, Chicago architect Daniel Burnham designed this, New York’s oldest skyscraper. Any building sat in the central flow of a main road is likely to struggle, eroding like a rock column in the sea. Burnham's beautiful but ill-fated design combined elements of French and Italian Renaissance architecture. The building's triangular plan developed from its odd plot of land. The overall effect is of a palazzo stretched to great height. Very popular due largely to its great visibility and bizarre appearance, photographers quickly became fascinated, sparkling its celebrity. It is a triumphant Beaux-Arts design.
