Gehry had to trade his love of classical music for rock and roll in this project. Electric guitar pieces became the literal building blocks for an early design model. The exterior is as interesting as the interior. Textures and colours are cleverly and complexly arranged in order to symbolize the fluidity of music. The exterior consists of stainless steel and painted aluminium shingles, individually cut, shaped and painted: steel coloured in mirrored purple, silver and gold. The red and blue sections conceal aluminium, each expressing a different shade from differing perspectives. ‘The red will fade with time, altering the appearance of the building's exterior and reflecting how music is ever changing.’ Only with a three-dimensional computer program called CATIA, for fighter jets, was the project enabled, something common practice nowadays, but very clever at the time.
