Labelled ‘a work of art for works of art’. As the first museum design by Pei, the Everson has been credited with launching his world-famous career, placing the museum high up in contemporary architecture. The building garnered great critical praise and earned the museum the American Institute of Arts Honor Award (America’s highest professional recognition for architectural excellence). Pei designed the Museum to be a massive sculptural object in itself, sitting in a plaza and surrounded by the forms of the modern city, with smaller art within – rejecting the traditional notion that a museum needed only to be a container for art, deciding it ought to be a sculptural work of art itself.
