Known in Bilbao by its Basque name "Zubizuri" ("white bridge"), this bridge design was a replacement for a design that had hit the rocks. The local authorities commissioned Calatrava to design a bridge that remained true to the original idea, a statement symbolizing the trade of land between the connecting municipalities. The curved bridge deck is suspended by steel cables, the whole structure painted white, as with other Calatrava designs. The deck is made largely of glass, a material not often found in bridges, rightly so as many people have slipped in wet weather, creating unnecessary legal costs. These elements themselves are made in a way that reflects the sweeping parabolic form of the bridge design.
