The north-west coast of Lanzarote is a total contrast to the easy-going beaches and bays of the south. Exposed to the Trade Winds which blow steadily from the north-north-east and formed by volcanic eruption, the coast is dramatic. It's well worth a visit. Coach trips go from the resorts in the south, or it is easy to drive as the roads are well maintained and there are free car parks near many of the view points. Energetic cyclists like the area too.

Much of the coast is inaccessible because of the steep volcanic terrain, but the road from Punta del Volcan to El Golfo runs by the sea, past wave-swept cliffs and black sand beaches. You can see the geometrical patterns of a sea-salt works, the Salinas de Janubio, from this road.

Further north La Santa and Famara Beach are both good for surfing. Famara beach is long and exposed to the wind so the conditions are often ideal for kite surfing as well.

From the extreme north of the island you can look over the sea to the island of La Graciosa and small islands beyond. It's a far-reaching view and there is a special viewpoint created to enjoy it, the Mirador del Rio. This closes at quarter to six (quarter to seven in peak season). The many visitors who come to see the sunset walk along the cliff-top road to the left to enjoy the view.
