Matsushima or "Pine Islands" Bay is one of the "three scenic views" of Japan as compiled in the 17th century and has long been the subject of Japanese landscape art. As the name suggests, the bay is peppered with tiny islands clad with graceful bonsai-like pine trees. You can take a boat tour of the bay and/or drive around it for the best views. The scenery is gentle rather than dramatic.
