In the day this was touted as being the biggest – thus best – disco in the world. It was certainly proven to be one of the nosiest, and was infamous because of it, and servicing a potential 5,500 guests there’s no reason to suspect it might not be one of the biggest.

Opened in 1979, a glorious sight of ancient style pillars and light shows, Halikarnas is spread over three floors and old and new hits. With very little seating, you can get a lot of dancing and drinking done on the two lower levels then get a bit of respite up the top, which has cushioned benches in the Turkish style.

It used to be that Friday and Saturday were foam party nights and that there was a free beer night each week as well, and you pay depending on the event – but this isn’t just a club, it’s been around a long time and thinks a lot of itself so expect to pay for your night out. You might get a big name DJ thrown into your admission price, or some free local drinks, but you’ll always get a show.

Opens at 10 but people don’t even start arriving until 12.
