The ancient city of Knidos perches on a cape, just connected to the mainland by a sandy bar, but despite its position it's quite well preserved. You can walk all the way around the city walls, within which the rubble marking building foundations is all quite close together – this was a pretty built up, populous city.

The whole city was supposed to have been built for Aphrodite, and the temple for her is one of the best preserved or a well preserved lot of structures. The other main buildings are the agora, the theatre, an odeum, a temple of Dionysus and a temple of the Muses.

One of the prizes of the city was a statue of Aphrodite, copies of which are now part of the Vatican's collection. Some of the most beautiful statues were 'discovered' and removed from the city bound for the British Museum, the big lion in the atrium is an example of what was removed.
