A small rural town since Roman times, Ptuj was built up into today’s city after WWII. Its historic centre with medieval streets and surviving buildings has turned up artefacts dating from its glory days first as a Roman town, then later during the middle ages, when most of the buildings date from. The city’s castle, several monasteries and a handful of churches are the main historic attractions, but walking through the streets you’ll come across ancient carved doors and stone window grilles.
