At a key spot on the trade routes, Nürnberg sprawled and grew wealthy between the 11th and 16th Centuries when it was one of the capitals of the Holy Roman Empire. During the end of this period it also became one of the centres of the Renaissance. In the 20th Century Nürnberg was best known for its significance to the Nazi party and the city is littered with examples of Nazi architecture. Around ninety percent of the original medieval centre was destroyed by Allied bombing, so without its architecture Nürnberg relies on its traditional industries like toy making and gingerbread and sausage production to attract visitors looking for a historic city (though the castle and some glorious churches have been repaired.).
