Maybe not the most obvious choice for travellers but there is nowhere like Mount Isa. Mining town grown rich off the underground mining of silver, lead, copper and zinc, now shaped by the piles of mined earth, mining towers, smelting stacks and quarries - this town and it’s people have more than their share of minerals in the blood. Slow, rural and outback, Mount Isa still sees itself as a bit sophisticated, there are sound restaurants and facilities - which feels unique in such a remote outback setting - so it’s rough and ready but with the option of getting a manicure at the end of the day to get you back into shape. Actually situated in the middle of a desert, man made Lake Moondarra looks like an inland sea shimmering flat on the red sand and the water sports enthusiasts who play on it make it seem like a crazy beach.
