Why is it that so many cities have a central park called Hyde? I'm not going to be able to answer that question in this review but I can give you an idea of what the Sydney version is about: It's got a big fountain with spurting turtles, huge shady trees keeping the sun off the lush watered plants underneath, some giant chess sets, a war memorial with an eternal flame and a mirror pond and a beautiful fig tree lined alley of trees. It also has some impressively huge palms and is home to a homeless population including one guy called Richard who looks like a young Mister Miyagi and knows a lot about art.

Hyde Park has a certain smell to it that comes from being watered and in Sydney so the scent is kind of tropical and more noticeable at night. The smell could also have something to do with the possums and sugar gliders who sleep in the trees during the days and come out at night. The park isn't locked up at night, you can wander though at all hours, or take a nap there whenever you like.

Ben Lee in Hyde Park

The music video for the Ben Lee song 'Gamble Everything for Love' was filmed in Hyde Park - and in other Sydney Locations. It's a good way to capture the vibe of the place - just sans the mysterious scent.
