Take the high road – in this case the A82 - north out of Glasgow towards Loch Lomond and some of the most stunning scenery in the British Isles, especially if seen in the dappled light of sun streaming between rain clouds. Stop off for a snack at Crianlarich, then keep north until the highlands of Glencoe, where the MacDonald massacre took place, then on to Fort William, famous for Jacobite history, and the glens of Inverness. Loch Ness is just past Fort Augustus, then it's onwards across Spean Bridge to the Cairngorms National Park, then though the herds of red deer to the town of Pitlochry, where it's a drink down the pub – you've earned it.
