What lurks beneath the ground makes this an exceptional building but also with a very un-English item inside. Wing is a Saxon building with both an apse (semi circular outside wall around the altar) and beneath it is an original crypt. Despite the love of them with film and horror writers, crypts are in fact rather rare in English churches and this is something that some Saxon noble built after an inspired visit to Italy in the 8th or 9th century. Being a church of major architectural importance would be sufficient for many but at Wing they go one better with a magnificent Renaissance canopied tomb of 1552 that would look more at home in Rome than a modest country church. 3 miles south west of Leighton Buzzard (where there is a delightful narrow gauge railway!)
