Compared to Europe’s great cathedrals, St. John’s in Nicosia is tiny. In fact it’s tiny even when compared to Nicosia’s other churches. But it’s not the size that counts it’s what you do with it – and in this case that corresponds to the interior, which is worthy of being in that list of European cathedrals. It doesn’t have a dome to decorate and only a single vaulted roof, but it has long side walls which are covered in frescos inspired by stories from the bible. These are the original artworks, as is the iconostasis which is covered in gold leaf with four large icons. Naturally the cathedral has a thrown for when the archbishop visits – it’s a very grand affair considering the size again.

The cathedral was built in 1662, but the site had already been used by the church as a Benedictine Abbey – also St. John’s.

Visit in the morning to avoid the tour buses which drop in at regular intervals.
