It appears from a distance a little like a Turkish palace, with thin, minaret-like belfries piercing the spaces between the raised, pale domes and crowned with Donatello’s statue of Gattamelata, a Renaissance dictator of Padua. A church already stood on this site when St. Anthony was alive, and years of additions resulted in an architectural collage of styles, mainly Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque, intertwined in Padua’s smallest church. St. Anthony was buried within the original building, which is now the Chapel of the Black Madonna, containing a beautiful, black-haired ‘Madonna with Christ Child’ by Rainaldino di Puy-l’Eveque. Numerous statues by Donatello, Altichiero da Zevio’s ‘Crucifixion’ and many other significant works are also to be found here.
