The Cathedral of Braga’s extensive history has laid layer upon layer of artistic style over its original 11th Century shell to create Portugal’s richest cross-section of religious architecture, from Romanesque through Gothic, baroque and manueline. Aside from its unusually well-preserved Romanesque features, gargoyle-guarded chapel and several royal tombs, the cathedral boasts a high choir with an 18th Century painted ceiling and gilt wood choir stalls, which frame two ornate baroque gilt wood organs regarded as the most outstanding pieces of their style in Portugal.
