San Francisco de Arequipa Catedral

Listed under Churches & Abbeys in Arequipa, Peru.

Stately and extensive, the Arequipa Cathedral stretches the full length of the Plaza de Armas in Arequipa. A fabulous example of Spanish colonial architecture, it sports twin towers above a 16th Century neo-Renaissance main church and gothic vault, strange and beautiful against the backdrop of the towering El Misti volcano, with palm trees flourishing in the Plaza in front. It has been shaken by many earthquakes and repeatedly restored, using the local volcanic, white ‘sillar’ rock, in keeping with many of Arequipa’s buildings. The interior boasts a Belgian organ, given as a gift and the largest in South America, and an intricately carved wooden pulpit.
