Before there were resorts and retreats littering the slopes of these mountains there were churches and monasteries, many of then dating from the Byzantine period. Nestled into valleys and clinging precariously to peaks, many of these churches are hundreds of years old. There are nine in particular that are deserving of attention – as recognised by UNESCO, and added to their World Heritage list – these for their beautifully detailed murals depicting saints and stories and inlaid with gold for added shine. Some of the most revered art is on the walls of the Assinou Church, it dates from early on in the 12th Century but has been added to over time.
The best way to see the churches is on foot, strolling between them admiring the lovely, steep views on your wanderings between pretty villages and new resorts.
It was the region’s copper with made it rich which is how this kind of art was paid for.
