Designed with a strong Gothic style in mind, to mirror that of Seville Cathedral, Lima Cathedral has been repeatedly restored and on one occasion almost completely rebuilt following several severe earthquakes which destroyed much of Peru’s capital. Besides its magnificent vaults and an opulent baroque chapel containing an ivory sculpture of Christ, the 17th Century cathedral also has a glorious collection of carvings and its own religious art museum, as well as being the final resting place of Francisco Pizarro, founder of Lima.
