Our Lady of Kazan is the most venerated icon in Russia, attributed with protecting the country from falling to the Swedish, the Polish and the French. The painting in gold and dark hues, was discovered in Kazan in 1579, after Mary appeared to a little girl and lead her to it. The version on display in this cathedral is just a copy, but it's a very old and respected one at that.
There's a reason this church, though Russian Orthodox, looks so much like St. Peter's Basilica in Rome – it's because the design was based on it. The columns on the outside are echoed inside, which adds an air of grandeur to the respectful atmosphere created by the amazing collection of religious art which decorates the cathedral. Built in 1810, primarily as a prayer from the Russian people to win the war against Napoleon, when they did win it it became a place to remember and celebrate the victory. Field Marshall Kutuzov who lead the Russian forces in the great battle of 1812 is interred within the church.
