Jordan's Quakers Meeting House, Buckinghamshire

Listed under Churches & Abbeys in London, United Kingdom.

Not a Parish Church but a Meeting House of the Society of Friends, better known as the Quakers. As with most of their early meeting houses, it is very much a domestic style building but with great dignity and atmosphere. Few visitors are unaware of its quiet and calming presence on the spirit gained by just sitting and being silent – not a common pastime in this noisy age. William Penn, the father and founder of Pennsylvania in the USA is buried in the burial ground of this modest brick and tiled building with its simple hat pegs and benches inside. It is a stark contrast to the grand churches of London barely 20 miles away but also serves to show the diversity of places of worship in England. 22 miles west of London and close to junction 2 of the M40.
