This Jesuit church was one of the most important in the new world when it opened for worship in 1635, and was decorated accordingly, in fact artistic work on the church continued until 1767. On the outside it’s based on Rome’s Church of San Jesus, but inside it’s a wonder of architectural fusion with a Renaissance style dome and Baroque high altars.

The colonial paintings and mass of frescos which are so detailed they appear to move are by local artists of the highest calibre and the ornate wood carvings are by Pedro Laboria, one of Spain’s most revered sculptors.
