Also known as Saint Virgin Mary's Coptic Orthodox Church, the Hanging Church is one of the most popular churches in Cairo, and because it dates back to the 3rd century A.D, it is also one of the oldest. The reason it got its nickname is because of its location above a gatehouse of Babylon Fortress and its nave is suspended over a passage. Enter the church from the street through big iron gates and under a pointed stone arch. The church has twin bell towers with a modern courtyard, decorated in biblical designs. There are lots of drawings and figurines throughout the walls of the church, giving you brief history lessons as you wander about it.
