The Geghard Monastery's current structure can be dated to the 13th century although its origins can be traced back to pre-Christian times. It's said to have housed one of the lances used during Jesus Christ's crucifixion, hence its name Geghard-meaning lance in Armenian. Located near the capital of Yereman, Geghard Monastery is carved into the side of a mountain. Visitors can explore the many carved chambers and caves within the monastery complex. Guided tours are recommended.
