Eglise St.-Germain-des-Pres

Listed under Churches & Abbeys in Paris, France.

First built to guard a relic of the True Cross, Saint-Germain-des-Pres is the oldest church in Paris. Parts of it date back to the 6th Century but damage during the Norman invasion and again during the Revolution mean that several architectural and artistic eras are represented within it, though the main structure is Romanesque. The heart of Descartes is contained in the adjacent chapel and intensely colourful frescoes by Hippolyte Flandrin line the walls of the nave, but Parisians know the church best for its heavenly concert performances, which echo gloriously due to the church’s interior shape, built for acoustic enhancement.
