Its full name is The Cathedral Church of Christ, Blessed Mary the Virgin and St. Cuthbert of Durham, but its known to all but the lithe of tongue as Durham Cathedral, and is one of the best examples of Norman church architecture in Europe.

The St. Cuthbert, included on high with Christ and the Virgin Mary is Cuthbert of Lindisfarne, a 7th Century saint whose treasures and shrine are part of the cathedral complex. These are on public display. Other attractions for the modern day visitor are the views from the tower, only 325 steps and a view over all of Durham is yours, the head of St. Oswald of Northumbria, not on display, and the daily choir accompanied services. As an architecturally important building, the ribbed vault and narrow pointed, nave roof are some of the features to admire.

Durham Castle, across the River Wear, was the seat of the Bishop of Durham and both him home and workplace were built at the same time and are now listed together as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Looks magnificent from the outside.

If you ever go past Durham on the train, you see a magnificent sight.. You overlook Durham Castle and Durham Cathedral. I have visited Durham many times, but never actually been in the Cathedral. But if it anything like the view from the outside then it truely is a spectacular sight.

It's spectacular inside as well - you should have a look in next time you're passing.
