Durham Castle is the kind of castle that people would base their Lego castles on. Hexagonal towers break up the wall and there are turrets with narrow archer friendly windows. An 11th Century castle built in the motte and bailey style, Durham was the seat of the Bishop of Durham, appointed by the king to keep the peasants in line after the problems of the Norman invasion of 1066.

Originally built by the Normans, the buildings that make up Durham Castle are now used by Durham University. The buildings, including the main hall, one of the largest rooms of any castle, were given to the University of Durham in 1837 to be renovated from their dilapidated state from the original plans. Students can still live in the castle (like being Harry Potter!), but otherwise you can only enter on a guided tour.
