The churches of Chiloé were started by the Jesuit Peripatetic Mission in the 17th and 18th centuries and are a spectacular display of wooden architecture, protected and sheltered by the northern mountains. They have angle shaped roofs, stone foundations, and a facade tower with the cross and belfry. These unique churches illustrate the blend of native and European ideas and are a UNESCO World Heritage site.
