Founded in 1695, Christ Church has been an integral part of Philadelphia throughout the American Revolution. The current building on 2nd Street was completed in 1744 and was the church for the likes of Benjamin Franklin and his wife Deborah and Betsy Ross. It is also where George Washington and John Adams went to church during their Presidencies when Philadelphia was the nation’s capital. Three blocks west on Arch Street from the church is the equally famous Burial Ground. This is where Benjamin Franklin and four other signers of the Declaration of Independence are buried. Even though admission to the church is free, there is a suggested donation. In addition, there is a small admittance fee for the Burial Ground.
HELPFUL HINT: If you’re in a time crunch or you are not interested in touring the entire complex, Benjamin Franklin’s grave site is visible from Arch Street.
