Historic buildings in Connecticut are a dime a dozen, yet New Haven’s Center Church manages to stand out among the rest. We’ve all heard the Puritanical analogy of a City on a Hill, but what about a church on a hill? And what about a hill built under a church?

When church leaders found the Village Green filled with graves, instead of finding a new location for their church, they simply built one on pillars, leveling the area with new ground. This is how a crypt was built under Center Church over 300 years ago.

It is this colorful history that makes Central Church worth visiting today.
