Cathedrale Notre-Dame de Strasbourg

Listed under Churches & Abbeys in Strasbourg, France.

Originally a Romanesque building, the Cathedral of our Lady of Strasbourg was completed during the 14th Century as a towering example of the late Gothic style. It remained the world’s tallest church until the late 19th Century but despite its hulking presence, its elaborate exterior is splendidly delicate, with finely patterned stonework and sculptures rendered in warm, pink Vosges sandstone. Inside, one of the world’s largest astronomical clocks can be found, and its mechanism is still functional, moving a bell-ringing angel and several other figures around at set hours, as well as accurately pinpointing the positions of the planets.
