Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption

Listed under Churches & Abbeys in Córdoba, Spain.

A surreal, beautiful melding-together of architectural and artistic styles, the Mezquita was originally built as a mosque in the 8th Century. Rather than being destroyed and replaced, it was gradually converted by various conquering peoples to include their own architectural ideas, and eventually the features necessary for a Roman Catholic place of worship in the 13th Century. It contains hundreds of columns made of carved onyx, jasper, granite and marble and many examples of wonderful geometric and nature-inspired Islamic art.
