In 1891, George Heins and Christopher Grant LaFarge won a prestigious competition to design what would become the largest cathedral in the world. Their plan incorporated several architectural styles, including Gothic, Romanesque and Byzantine, and the realization of it was such a laborious process that it has still not been completed. Despite the financial, practical and architectural setbacks, the building as it stands today is stunning. The 38-metre high nave is circled by seven unique chapels, representative of the seven main cultural groups to immigrate to New York during this period, and the grounds are home to Greg Wyatt’s famous ‘Peace Fountain’, a monument to cross-cultural and religious understanding.
