Built under the instruction of Ivan the Terrible to celebrate the capture of an enemy and placed in a prime position facing across Red Square, the cathedral of St. Basil’s most outstanding feature is, surprisingly, its colourful, joyous, candy-like exterior. It is made up of a tent-shaped central building and eight chapels of varying size, all capped with onion domes in twisted green and yellow stripes, golden pineapple-skin diamonds and red and green fish-scale patterns like a group of tiny circus tents. Legend states that Ivan the Terrible was so delighted with the result that he had the architects responsible blinded, to prevent them from creating anything comparable for anyone else.
