You'd be pardoned for thinking you were in Paris or Cologne, staring up at the soaring spires of the Catedral de Santa María, its rose window and steep spires drawing inspiration from its European counterparts. Only when you turn back around to face the sleepy town of Burgos do you realize that you are in the heart of Castilian Spain.
But there are unique quirks to this gothic cathedral that are unparalleled. Statues of the twelve apostles preside peacefully over the Coroníera portal, and ornate aisles branch out towards 15 separate chapels. Its dedication is beautifully conveyed through a crowned statue of the Virgin Mary with the corresponding inscription ‘Beautiful art Thou, and graceful’. The magnificent kaleidoscope quality of the interior ceiling is an aesthetic feast.
