Many present day parish churches were in the middle Ages “something much grander”, Boxgrove being a charming example. It was a Priory church that was sadly mutilated in the reign of Henry VIII at the Reformation, much of the church being destroyed and plundered for its building material but luckily locals were able to rescue the chancel as their parish church. The fine interior which indicates the grandeur of earlier times is enhanced by attractive ceiling paintings and there is a sumptuous but never used private burial chapel (chantry) of a type that many rich people would have aspired to in the Middle Ages. A delightful slightly overgrown backwater, Boxgrove is typical of the many altered but attractive surprises to be found in the English countryside. 3 miles north east of Chichester.
