Construction began on the head church of the Franciscan Order in 1228, laying the foundation for what would become a World Heritage Site and Assisi’s most famous attraction. Since its creation, the art and architecture of the Basilica have been altered and added to by a number of talented artists. Consequently, the unique and remarkable upper and lower basilicas and the crypt of St. Francis himself have induced awe in visitors for centuries. In particular, the Giotto frescos have had a significant influence on the development of Western Art, and indeed were revolutionary when they were first painted.
