Listed under Christmas Markets in Aachen, Germany.
Most Christmas Markets are held in the town square or underneath the walls of a picturesque castle or church, and so is this one, only in this case under the castle ruins literally means ‘under’ the castle – in the tunneled out caves and grottoes of a Roman quarry. Warm light spills from the openings, revealing murals that decorate the walls adding to the magic of this unusual business address.
Actors will lead you through the tunnels towards ‘Santa’s velvet grotto’ – literally a grotto in this case – and give you an idea what it would have been like when people actually lived in these caves, allowing you to take your time over the traditional style Dutch gifts and treats on your way.

We need to know the dates of the Christmas Markets in Valkenburg
Tour operators are booking trips between early Nov. and the 10th of Dec., but I'm not aware that the official dates have been released yet.
Look at Crusader Holidays. We have been twice with them, they really look after you and the hotel in in town, so you can stroll in during the evening. Super deal. We will be going back in 2011.
Good luck.
Do you know when the dates are yet?
Can you tell me the dates of the market in 2010 and the best time to attend
The official dates for the 2010 markets haven't been announced yet, but the tour companies who run trips to them are anticipating the usual mid November opening.
When is the Christmas Market open in the Valkenbug Castle? What is the last day that it is open in December?
It's open between the 20th Nov 09 to 23th Dec 09 - so be quick!
Disappointed with Christmas Markets seen in other locations - the Valkenburg one was just what my friend and I expected of a Christmas Market. Definately would go back again.
Had a fantastic time visiting the Christmas Markets and caves in Valkenburg, cost is 4 eauro's each and you purchase a ticket, plenty of nice restaurants serving hot chocolate, and the egg nog is divine...
when is the last day its open
For 2009 it's open between 20 Nov and 23 Dec.
The market seems to be open all day but is always better at night time as you can see the lights in the town centre as well.
The entry is 4 euro p/p and kids under 4 go free I believe.
i would like to bring my mother in-law to see it and she is disabled
As Valkenburg is on a hill (Kouberg) it is possible as there are no steps. Also in the caves are no steps, but there are some bits that are quite steep to push a wheelchair up. Down would not be a problem...
Had a great stay in Valkenburg found the people so friendly that I look forward to going back again this year to visit all our new friends.
Christmas around the world is the theme of this Dutch Christmas market. Booths offer products from all over. The town is set on top of a series of caves, one of which is decorated for the Christmas season. Stalls also have authentic Dutch handcrafted products and gifts. Whether you want to take a tour of a cave or dine on some fine Dutch food, Valkenburg offers visitors a great Christmas market. It is also near Maastricht's Christmas Market and its Winterland, also well worth visiting. 17 November – 19 December

Valkenburg Christmas Market
Plenty of stalls to browse with all manner of goods, most Christmas linked. We thought the prices were high, even with the euro worth £0.84. We would have bought more if the prices were a little lower, as was the case with everybody on our tour. We wanted a fur hat with ear flaps...we'd seen one at 10.50 euros in Brussels. Same one here was 15 euros. Called 'the law of diminishing returns', isn't it? Very crowded, could do with a one way system. Long queues for the food and toilets. Gave up in the end. Nice day out but beware of the prices. Won't be going back.
