A total of around three hundred stalls ramble across the squares of Stuttgart's old town, their charmingly festive backdrops ranging from the dramatic 18th century New Castle and the 10th century Old Castle through rows of colourful Medieval houses to the imposing, Gothic St. Eberhart's Cathedral.
This Christmas market is one of Germany's largest so there's something for everybody. You'll discover the usual range of sparkling decorations, gifts and treats, and close by are two other options: the Medieval market of Esslingen and the elegant, baroque example at Ludwigsburg.
Stuttgart's market is special in particular for its range of children's activities, though. There's a whole 'Kinderland' - a fairytale-themed area, with its own miniature railway, an ice rink, puppet shows, storytellers, endless toy stalls and old-fashioned fairground rides. There's a nativity scene of real animals, and even a range of Christmas craft activities to take part in so, while your little Christmas angels are having fun, you can gaze on the sparkling scene and indulge in some honey-roasted almonds, a traditional bratwurst in a crispy roll, an intoxicating glass of spicy mulled wine... maybe a gingerbread cookie or two...
